Mobile phones are no longer limited to just calls and texts, ever since the Smartphone was introduced, manufacturers have been pushing the boundary between PDA, telephone and computer.
Think of a Smartphone as a mini hand held computer with all the benefits of a normal mobile. These clever devices can play various media, store a mammoth number of files and run software such as email programs, Internet browsers and various applications.
Every Smartphone runs on a dedicated platform to hold all the software and ensure smooth running of the device. These are called Operating Systems and are the most important part of the phone. The OS manages all the programs on the smartphone and makes sure they work quickly and efficiently. Software Stack
The Android Operating System, clearly defined by the little green robot is Google’s brainchild.
It’s open source, meaning developers can create apps for any area of the mobile phone. Because makers have free range over what they can create, lots of apps are being submitted to the Android Marketplace.
The Android system can handle a range of software and is regularly updated, meaning it’s constantly being improved. The Android system will also sync to your home and work computer, providing instant access to emails and media.
Research in Motion developed the BlackBerry operating system, specifically for its feature smartphones.
One of the main functions is email, or rather email and computer syncing so you can share work and media across both platforms. Extra apps can be found in BlackBerry app world, the company’s application store, which has a load of different apps for both business and consumer use.
The iPhone Operating System was built by Apple to be used solely on its own devices.
A key element of the iPhone OS is that it supports multi-touch gesture, making it simple to use.
Another core bonus is the Apple application store, which is the biggest around, from which you can download just about anything for your phone. It also has easy sync to your computer, mail and media programs.
Windows Mobile or Windows Phone as it’s now known is Microsoft’s operating system. It’s designed to reflect the desktop Windows setup both in looks and features.
With this in mind all Windows Phone handsets come with basic Microsoft Office apps pre-installed, and it supports email, computer and software syncing. A number of different apps are available via Windows Marketplace, the companies dedicated online application store.
The Symbian Operating System is one of Nokia’s projects, but can be found across a range of different phones.
The platform has recently changed to become open source, giving developer’s free reign over what kind of apps they produce. The Symbian Operating system is regularly updated, as is the Ovi store, Nokia’s ever growing application centre. Symbian also features easy syncing with computers and email clients.

Bada is Samsung’s first operating system and was designed exclusively for use in their devices. .
It means “ocean” in Korean and took its maiden voyage on board the Samsung Wave in 2010. You don’t have to own the manufacturer’s top of range mobiles to see what Bada has to offer though.
