Have Nokia missed the boat? After all, touchscreen mobile phones have been released by just about everybody at this stage, so surely Nokia's late initial entry into the market will have to be a bit special to grab people's attention. Of course, there's no way Nokia is too late, as there are many potential touchscreen phone users waiting only for their device before taking the plunge! But is it special enough to steal some customers away from Samsung, LG and perhaps even Apple in addition to the Nokia die-hards who will buy it anyway? Let's take a closer look and see exactly why this could be the case!

Why You Should Buy The 5800!
  • A 3.2” touchscreen displaying a resolution of 360x640 and 16 million colours!
  • The latest 5th Edition Symbian S60 operating system, especially adapted for finger control.
  • The XpressMusic tag should tell you the 5800 is a great music phone, and it really is!
  • A 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual-LED flash.
  • Assisted GPS with Nokia Maps installed.
  • The 5800 XpressMusic is a 3G device with HSDPA support.

When you first pick up the 5800, you'll be surprised to feel it's nowhere near as wide as many of its competitors, it really feels like a regular Nokia candybar, despite the big screen and lack of keypad. This is a considerable advantage when looking at the wide bodied iPhone 3G or Samsung Omnia, it also feels well-built and the 109 gram weight ensures it feels properly planted in your palm. The design may not be inspired, but it's by no means unattractive, meaning you'll want to wipe the inevitable finger prints off to keep it looking nice!

So, it looks good and fits in your pocket comfortably – but is it special? Yes, it is. Nokia have placed the 5800 XpressMusic in the middle of their range and haven't bestowed it with an N-series tag (we have to wait for the N97 for their N-series touchscreen), however the specification of the 5800 is so good, it out performs the majority of its rivals! First of all, the display is stunning, with everything looking bright and clear, then you have a 3G HSDPA connection plus Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE, covering just about every possible option out there.

With Symbian onboard, the 5800 XpressMusic is a proper smartphone too, with all of the downloadable software and customisation this brings with it. No matter what you want to do, there will be an app for you. For example, you want to use your 5800 for viewing office documents? No problem, just download QuickOffice and you're away! This version of the operating system has had an overhaul so it can be used on a touchscreen phone and it works very well, with Nokia implementing a 'double click' system to decrease the likelihood of making a wrong choice.

The music and media player is also first rate, with the Comes With Music download service active, a pair of very loud stereo speakers, a MicroSD card slot with a maximum 16GB capacity, easy touch controls and a front mounted dedicated music key – music is very much the 5800's party piece. Add in Assisted GPS, the 3.2 megapixel camera, a quoted 17 day standby time, a 3.5mm jack plug and video support and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic begins to look very much like a top range, all-in-one device!

Summary of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

All these features look good on paper, but when you factor in the 5800's reasonable price, it becomes difficult to find many other mobile phones which offer such excellent value for money. We may have had to wait a while, but Nokia have really delivered the goods with their first full touchscreen mobile phone, the 5800 XpressMusic.

First day of having it, wanted it so bad!!! Its amazing! Lovee it! Can add your top 4 contacts so you dont have to go through your whole contact list and can lock whole phone if it aint been touched in a certain amout of time (you choose what time) obviously dont have to if you dont want to. The sides of the phone are higher than the screen so if dropped wont damage the screen. Only drawback is when sent something by bluetooth, it goes into your inbox which can be annoying but other than that fabulous phone!!!! :)x

Easy to use and loads of features (this is why it gets 2 stars rather than 0) - but the hardware sucks! I've looked after my phone but have had to have the ear piece replaced and the lcd screen replaced - both of which are common faults with this phone!! The phone corrupts all memory cards and now cannot detect when any memory card is inserted. As of tonight the phone cannot be detected by any PC. I've had enough of this junk. Every week there is a new problem with this phone. Also, the alarm also always goes off 7 minutes late and the clock loses time by the second. Hard reset the phone numerous times but it just doesn't help. I recently read that Nokia released this phone as like a beta test for the N97. Complete garbage. Avoid completely. Software wise it's probably the best phone I've ever encountered, hardware wise it's the worst by far! I had a Samsung for 5 years and it worked fine until I dropped it in the bath. When my contract is up I will be steering clear of Nokia

Love this phone, I have had near enough every phone going but this is the best by far, would def recomend this to anybody, even if your are a touchscreen virgin you will get to grips with this phone in no time, the music quality is ACE very loud through speakers, camra is top quality seems more like a 8 megapixel instead of 3.2, if your looking for a new phone go for this one...

Great phone, fairly easy to use once used to the touch screen, transferred photos, music and files easily from pc. Instruction book rubbish doesnt tell you anythin except basic set up, just play with phone until you get where you want to be, there are still things i am unsure about but will get there!! Ps i am no spring chicken, i am in my early 50's and would recommend this phone to any age! Would purchase case to protect large screen.

Don't buy unless you have a PhD in Astrophysics, or Computing, impossible to understand, though full of features. Not for the faint-hearted. I love the size and bright screen, but connecting it, and understanding the menus was too difficult for me.

Had this for about a month now after upgrading from my N-95 and joining the smartphone world and so far so good. Definitely an i-phone killer. What you have here is a solid, reliable phone with additional functions up the whazoo rather than a slick mp3/4 player that just happens to make phonecalls. Nokia has managed to gel the best of its existing phone knowledge with the better aspects of the smartphone genre, while still managing a few innovations here and there. The touchscreen interface may not be quite as swish as the i-phone or omnia, but it's definitely usable and comfortable. You can configure this baby to within an inch of its life so it would be hard to imagine somebody not getting everything they want out of a smartphone here. There's a reason that Nokia is the world leader in mobile comms technology, and I'd say they've spent their time before release assessing the competition and (more importantly) paying attention to feedback from users.

i've had this phone for 4 days now.. i do love it! its stylish and as its da first touchscreen iv had its brillant. Camera quality is ok, the music player is brillant and v.loud! Bad points, the battery life doesnt last very long, also the instructions manual is not great as it doesnt cover everything and doesnt explian things very well.. Struggling to work out a few fings, weird coz iv always had a nokia phone. Could be better!

What a great phone. I was unsure about getting it as I have an N95 8GB but its great. I was worried about getting used to a touch screen but I actually feel i can write and text faster! Loud phone, I need to hear it wen I'm carryin it in my bag and this is loud so i can. It comes with a wrist strap with a pluck attached to use with the touch screen as well as a touch screen pen neatly situated in the back. The sim slips in the side of the phone, as does the 8GB memory card that comes with the phone although it will take up to 16GB if u've really got loads of files! Fast internet. Clear screen, responsive touch. lock key at side so u just flick it to unlock or lock and prevent accidental damage. I'm no techy but found it easy to use. Transfer all info from nokia compatible phones I did for all my contacts, messages, notes etc saved me loads of time. voice activated dialling and apps. I dont think u will be disappointed if u get this phone, having moved from a n95 8gb, i'm certainly impressed.

A fabulous phone with all you could want in terms of functionality, usability and technology. The handwriting input makes texting incredibly quick and easy and the qulaity of the screen makes watching videos and even films a pleasure. The GPS feature means you can forget the need for seperate SATNAV and the speed of the internet connection is fab. All in all a brill phone, especcially considering the fact it's free on such cheap price plans. Well done! Nokia and Dialaphone = brilll service!!

the much awaited nokia touchphone is here.It was worth waiting for this phone to arrive. So easy to ue and very user friendly if you're a loyal nokia phone user. Applications are simple yet relevant for public use unlike other phones which has lot of software installed but not really use on a day to day basis. Touch screen phone that's quick to respond, easy to browse on the web, not as quick as iphone but if you're really a lover of user and handy phone, this nokia 5800 is the one for you. I previously had a 3G iphone but has to give it away as I find it very bulky to carry and looks like you always carry a remote control. Highly recommended and another good product from nokia.

The 5800 is a brilliant phone and excellent value for money. I have just changed to the 5800 from my long-held N95 handset that I use for mobile email and the ViewRanger off-road GPS application. I have found the touch screen to operate very well. It does make the phone operation **so** much more efficient - and makes answering emails (and texting for those of us that struggle with txt spk) quicker too with the virtual keyboard. The choice of three keyboard styles (full, mini, and numeric) works really well. By the way - ViewRanger on the Nokia 5800, which I use for walking and cycling, is awesome too!

This phone is the best one I've had yet! It's sleek unique design, and its smooth touch screen adds to its beauty. A definite replacement for the iPhone. Taking the best of Nokia's technology, and the newest touch of technology, the 5800 has proved its self as a good phone with a moderate price tag. I am proud to say I've had this phone for over two months, and I am 100% delighted with it.

Hi I love my new 5800, it’s great! I have the blue one I have had it about a week now and think it’s really great its quick and I think if you want one of these phones get one because its really great!

I have had this phone for 5 days now I think its great. I never really liked the idea of a touch screen phone till nokia brought their own touch screen phone out. Its great for music and the Internet is so quick. I can't think of any think that I can fault about this phone it is perfect.

Average customer rating : 5 out of 5 Dave Chopra , 06/02/2009
This is an amazing phone. Was struggling to find a new one until this arrived. Agree with previous review that other handsets are just too bulky and this just fits nicely in your pocket no matter what you're wearing. The touch screen is taking a little to get used to but would definitely recommend this phone.

Average customer rating : 5 out of 5 Invincible Khan , 06/02/2009
Royal Mail delivered this gadget to me today in the morning. I was awaiting the new touch from Nokia for too long and I am really pleased you have it in my hand. Nokia has once again proved its productivity. The phone has fast processor and works great. My two most important concerns were YouTube and the Web Browsing and Nokia has done a very good job here. This gadget is Nokia's stereotype for N97 and I am really satisfied.

Average customer rating : 5 out of 5 Mike , 31/01/2009
I've had this phone for a day now and its very good. Unlike Omnia and iPhone it’s not too bulky or heavy and the battery life is considerably better. Being smaller it makes making calls easier than iPhone. Connectivity is really easy to set up although some functions are a little slow to respond. Only problem is my g/f now wants one! In summary a cheaper more plastic version of the iPhone but for me that makes it better!

Average customer rating : 5 out of 5 sam thoma , 23/01/2009
I have had this phone for 2 days now and I really can’t fault it. The sleeve that the phone is supplied with can sometimes grip the phone too much although this may just be mine because some of my friends have the phone and theirs have been supplied with leather cases. The stylus that is built into the phone also is not very effective however the phone has a nice feel to it and the camera is very good for a 3.2mp snapper.
