Dial-a-Phone review of Nokia 6111

The Nokia 6111 is one of our most popular phones thanks to its fun styling and its great value for money. A smooth slider phone, it's the baby of the Nokia family, weighing just 92 grams and standing just 84mm tall. It still packs a fair punch though, with a megapixel camera, an FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 layer and a web browser.

Nokia originally intended the 6111 as a ladies phone, one that would comfortably fit into a handbag, but it's a popular choice with the guys as well (except for the pink one!). There's a four-way direction pad on the front of the phone and four function keys to allow you to operate most features of the phone when the keypad is shut. The keypad itself is plastic with big square keys, which make for comfortable texting.

The screen is relatively small, and the resolution at 128x160 pixels weaker than many phones these days, but the on-screen display is simple and easy to use and the quality is not missed.

Within the contacts book, you can select the size you want to view your names and you can toggle between contacts saved to the sim card and those saved to the phone. Shortcuts for eight of your favourite numbers are available and there's also voice recognition technology for speed of dialling. You can also assign pictures to your contacts.

The message editor is well designed as with most Nokias, and you can send a message in up to six parts - over 900 characters. Multimedia messaging is available as well.

The 6111 includes a MP3 player, which is impressive for a phone in its range, but with an internal memory of just 23 MB and no option of expanding the memory with a memory card, cannot be seriously considered as a viable MP3 player. Take a look at the range of Sony Walkman phones if this is something of interest to you. The camera is a basic 1 megapixel, but takes fairly good quality pictures in daylight and has a strong built in flash for taking pictures in the dark and a digital zoom included as well.

Overall the Nokia 6111 is a tidy little compact phone that does all the basics well and looks and feels good. If you're interested in gadgets, you might want to look at some of Nokia's more recent offerings such as the N95 or the N73, but if you're after a decent handset at a decent price, the 6111 is for you.

A nice, simple to use phone with very basic features. Camera was disappointing and the memory was very poor. Would recommend this phone to people who don't use camera or MP3 player and just want to make calls.

This phone looks good and is very small. It has all the usual features and is relatively easy to use. There is one major problem - the sliding mechanism. With both handsets I have owned I have found that the phone slides open too easily when left in a pocket which unlocks the keypad and has resulted in a huge number of unintended calls and much annoyance. There are many better phones out there - this is one I would definitely avoid!

Great phone in general but annoyed that no none seems to supply the data lead as standard. This accessory costs £25 via Nokia but my advice is to get a bluetooth dongle from PC World for £15 then any bluetooth device can communicate with the PC
