Dial-a-Phone review of LG KE970 Shine

The LG Shine marked the final transition for LG from uninspiring, snap-shut clamshell handsets to sexy stylish mobile fashion icons, a reformation that began with the exciting Chocolate and continued with the classy touchscreen Prada phone. The Shine once again changed the mobile landscape and proved that LG have added a serious dose of fashion to their phone range.

The Shine is housed in an entirely metal shell, giving the impression of a sturdy, solidly built handset, which, though heavy, feels comfortable rather than cumbersome. It is not a large handset at just 99 mm tall and even though it is not the thinnest phone on the market, its sleek lines give it a slimline feel.

The name Shine presumably comes from the outer surface of the screen, which reverts to a mirror when the display is off. Whether this is a feature that will appeal to men and women alike is debatable, but the Shine is certainly a unisex handset, slim and sexy, yet solid and packed with gadgets.

The Shine uses a scroll bar for navigation, an unusual feature on phones these days, and this can take a bit of getting used to if you haven't used one before. On first try it appears to be a little clumsy and unresponsive but we got used to it after using it for a while. The little buttons to the right and left of the scroll bar are also navigational buttons; so don't ignore these when using the phone for the first time!

The display is one of the Shine's strong points, well laid out, easily navigable with a clear display even in strong light conditions. Soft keys call up the main menu and the contacts book from the start screen, and the menu can be ordered either as a 3x3 icon grid or in list view. All the subsequent menus are in list view. A nice little feature that more phones should employ is the use of numbers next to each of the menu headings as shortcuts, which makes the Shine a very simple phone to navigate. Another quirky little feature (that we're not sure how excited we should be about!) is the option to change the number input display when making a phone call into a range of different, vaguely comic fonts!

The contacts book is very user friendly and allows you to assign pictures to each individual contact, though we did find that this cramped the information for the contacts a little. You can also assign a different ringtone to different contacts and place your entries into different groups according to their relation to you!

The messaging service is an improvement on the old Chocolate interface and it automatically saves a draft of each message should you suddenly exit the message screen. It also offers you a list of your most recent message recipients when you come to send a message, one of the features we particularly liked on the Sony Ericsson K810i.

The LG Shine is a fairly well equipped phone, with a decent MP3 player that continues the work when you navigate away from the music menu, and a good camera with auto-focus and the Schneider-Kreuznach branding also seen on the Prada phone by LG. There are admittedly phones out there that feature stronger cameras and cleverer MP3 players, but the Shine puts on a good showing, and adds a good deal of style into the bargain!

I found this phone very easy to use and set up by most people including myself as I have a disability which means I need a phone that is both lightweight and easy to use. This phone fitted the bill perfectly! I can use e-mails and Internet from my phone with no problems at all

Beautifully designed and I like the features, however, myself and my husband are both on Orange, I never have a signal at home and have to stand in the garden to send a text, even on my drive I can make emergency calls only, but my husbands old reliable Nokia always has a healthy signal, so not a network issue!!! Also have had probs with the phone turning off even in the middle of texting and the battery life is very poor. Big shame as this is otherwise an elegant easy to use phone.

Nice phone and a great display. Its cool to use, makes heads turn. Once you get used to the different functions, great quality pics too, and it’s easy to use. I like it, the best mobile I’ve had. Well Done LG!

Nice phone, caller button too close to top slider for people with large fingers. Scroll bar very sensitive. Can’t seem to add tunes to alarm. Camera okay but subject can’t move - it takes a long time to take the photo after you push the button. Game screen stuck on mine and the web browser stuck, couldn’t cancel it and had to switch the phone off to get it cleared.

I love this phone! It really does turn heads! I stood by the door of a shop waiting for my friend and I was holding my phone and almost every person who walked in (and there were a lot of people!) looked down at my hand and even when they had walked past they still carried on looking at it. haha! It made me laugh tbh. Everyone loves my phone! I've had it since September and I've only just managed to scratch the back after numerous times of dropping it. I didn't realise it was on my lap as I got out of the car at night and it fell on the floor then I stood on it! But there is only a little scratch on the back! So yes it’s a great phone! The scroll wheel is okay, I think it can be a bit sensitive but you don't really have to use it. It comes with a screen cleaner which is really handy, but tbh I don't even touch the screen. The only time I have to clean it is when my friends want to look at it. hehe. It's really slim and is definitely not a brick phone even though people say its heavy. It's a bit heavy but it’s not a bad thing at all! The memory is not good though! However all I did was purchase a 1GB micro SD card and then I bought the adapter which you can just put into the computer. It cost me £20 for the 2 items! £15 for the micro SD card and £5 for the adapter. I got them from Tesco. It’s definitely worth getting the SD card. And you don't need a special type of memory card to fit into it either. Some phones have to have a memory card which is designed for the phone but not the LG Shine. The camera is great too! The video camera is not too good, but it's the same with most mobile phones. I love it!

This is a terrible phone. I had the LG chocolate before and wasn't at all happy with that either! It turns itself off! You have to remove the battery and SIM, put them both back THEN it will turn back on!! Mine also acts as though it's switched off when people are trying to call/text me, but I can still call out on it… therefore, I don't have any idea that it's not in fact working and that people can't reach me! Nightmare phone!!

Very nice phone for its looks but doesn't have brilliant features, no shutter for the camera, damaged easily and cant see screen in sunlight, had it 6 months and I already don’t like it.

Well, where do I start, this phone is the best I have ever owned or used, if you want a phone that works brilliantly and sounds fantastic, get one of these! It also looks amazing and the MP3 player through decent headphones actually has much better sound clarity than my Samsung YPK5 dedicated MP3 player! As for ease of use its an absolute joy and the best mobile phone out there. I am not the type of person who would normally bother to write a review for anything but after using this phone I just had to, so don't even hesitate - go get one today you will not regret it, well done LG, top drawer!!!

Well done LG! You have made another GREAT phone! Feels very expensive and is stainless too! It is easy to navigate and is the best phone I have ever used! Also I have compared the camera with a Sony Ericsson K800i (3.2MP camera) and the tiny LG actually produces much sharper pictures even with its lesser (2.0MP camera)!

A very stylish phone but, can't see at all in sunlight, not loud enough and struggles with signal where others don't on same network. It also keeps turning off and not allowing me to turn back on. Not a happy chap!!!

Love this phone. The metal case really is well engineered, and it has a nice grained effect rather than the shinny Nokia 8800, so it feels and looks more expensive. The slide action is very smooth again making it feel expensive. This is one classy piece of kit! Highly recommended.
