Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week

Enjoy our roundup of some of the best mobile phone stories that you may have missed this week: 1. No New Nokia’s in Barcelona? Could this be correct? Despite Nokia shunning Mobile World Congress and setting up house across the road instead, there are rumours suggesting they won’t be debuting any new handsets at all.  We find this hard to believe, as if they have nothing new, then why bother going to the expense?  It seems like we’re not the only ones who think like this… 2. Nokia N8 Announced in Barcelona? The Nokia N8 is a rumoured 3.5″ touchscreen […]

Why Read Maps When You Can Race Them?

Modern mapping technology has turned any trip from A to B into an exercise in “Obey the computer voice,” lessons we’ll deeply regret when the robot revolution comes.  Can’t we make navigating fun again?  Nokia can, with Ovi Maps Racing - a Micro Machines style game which builds high-velocity racetracks out of any GPS location. It’s an excellent idea – adapt real street information into an impromptu course, allowing infinite replay-ability (or work-based wish-fulfilment as you turn your daily commute into a high-speed time trial.)  It’s also a cunning way to train for a trip, turning your destination into the finish line for […]

Sony Ericsson Officially Announce the Aspen

The Aspen is the latest GreenHeart mobile phone from Sony Ericsson, and another to be blessed with a tree-related name.  GreenHeart, as you may know, is the manufacturer’s range of mobile phones with ‘green’ aspirations, coming as they do in minimal packaging with CD-based manuals and complete with eco-friendly, low-consumption chargers. Up until now, the GreenHeart phones have been regular candybars or sliders – the Elm, Hazel and Naite for example – but the Aspen has both a touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard, plus plenty of other great features: 2.4″ 240×320 screen. A 3.2 megapixel camera. Assisted GPS. Wi-Fi and […]

Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week

Enjoy our roundup of some of the best mobile phone stories that you may have missed this week: 1.  WinMo 7.  Will It Or Won’t It Be At MWC? According to a CNET reporter, yes, it will!  The upcoming event will apparently serve as the platform for the new Microsoft OS’s official debut, which will be shortly followed by a developers presentation in March, summer 2010 completion and roll out by year end.  With Apple’s big announcement out of the way, plus Nokia and LG’s decision not to attend; if this turns out to be factual, then Microsoft could just […]

Nokia Gesture Control?

Nokia’s research scientists have released a video demonstrating their prototype mobile radar – a great way to claim “we did it first” credit without actually promising to deliver anything ever.  A heavily-modified N95 handset shows the system responding to user gestures, and even (intermittently) measuring the speed of moving objects. There are obviously an array of options for this kind of hardware, especially in a Wii-ed up world where even the oldest user is aware of motion control.  This system is more like Microsoft’s Project Natal in that it’s based on a user’s movement being detected by stationary hardware. And in that […]

Apple Launch the iPad

With as much hype surrounding it as the original iPhone, there can be few interested in consumer electronics who didn’t know that Apple were holding a new product launch yesterday evening and sure enough, the Apple iPad was launched. The iPad is a tablet computer which can be simply described as visually being a ‘large iPod Touch’.  Initially available for sale only in the USA, with other regions expected to follow in the early summer, the device is powered by a new 1Ghz Apple A4 processor and is loaded with Wi-Fi 802.11n and v2.1 Bluetooth, plus the usual Apple software […]
