Google Talk: What we’re hearing about the G-Phone

Talk of a Google-branded search service-packing phone has been circulating for months, but recently the rumour-mill has hurled itself into overdrive, with the blogosphere hanging on Google’s every word waiting for a denial, confirmation or announcement. So far, all Google will say is that there’s no handset yet but it’s a service their users definitely want (I’ll say). I’ve taken a look at some of the recent rumours, handset concepts and related news out there, including a distinctly Dial-a-Phone take on what we could be grasping in our eager hands if the whispered tales are true.
The Wall Street Journals claims that Google has been waving prototype phones around in front of potential partners has lead to an influx of ‘shopped concepts. Google’s white screen simplicity is what it’s famous for (in spite of Blackle), so you’d expect it to be clean and crisp design.
Google is working hard on mobile services
This is the only thing close to confirmation from Google that there’s anything like the fabled GPhone on the way is a statement that consumers “want Google search and Google applications on mobile, and [Google] is working hard every day to deliver that.”
Orange and T-Mobile hit the G-spot
Having reportedly discussed the Google phone with Orange way back in December, there are rumours Google took their deal to Verizon, who opted out. After declining Apple over the iPhone this isn’t a major shock. Rather than the eventual iPhone purveyor, AT&T, the rumour mill is insistent that T-Mobile will be the US network of choice, partnering with Orange in Europe. Hardware manufacturers mooted are LG (who, of course, released their own Google-loving handset) and HTC.
3G is at the top of the Wish List
Many sites have listed G-Phone wish lists asking for particular features or a truly usable, functional Linux-based Google OS. Universally popular, and unsurprising, is the plea for 3G. Even though 3G is just about on the way out in favour of its next generation, it’s still not fully being embraced by mobile phone manufacturers. Consumers were baffled by Apple’s choice of EDGE support for the all-singing, all-dancing iPhone (which Apple put down to size mattering), and they’re clamouring for decent connectivity. A phone which is going to be selling mainly on its online service virtues has got to have the best possible connectivity.

It’s about 05:30 hours Sunday August 26, 2007 and I’m in Hollywood, Florida USA. Just woke up after having a panic attack, thought I was having a heart attack, took a presecribed med, passed out. I’m alone, elderly, handicapped, stricken with arthritis, visually_impaired, needy, but still independent….and then still dreaming. My ideal telephone, whether desk set or mobile would be a device that could have helped me before, when I thought I was about to suffer a coronary. A DEVICE THAT COULD HAVE EFFECTIVELY BEEN ACTIVATED AND COMPLETED THE CALL WHEN I SHOUTED “DOCTOR - DOCTOR - DOCTOR - POLICE - EMERGENCY - CALL MY SON ERIC - CONFERENCE - CALL MY DAUGHTER AMY - CALL MY SON HARDY - DOCTOR - HOSPITAL - ANYBODY - HELP ME LIVE ANOTHER DAY.”
That is my kind of PHONE…..all else, with the music, the images, the sundry ordinary features, Blue Tooth, whatever, are just toys. You see, maybe you don’t see, especially if you’re a wee bit over 40 years old - OUR EYESIGHT BEGINS TO NEED HELP AS WE AGE…we need reading glasses. Stevie Wonder, Diane Schuur, Andrea Bocelli, to make a point, are blind, but they CAN STILL SING - THEY STILL HAVE VOICES - can communicate. The ideal phone, and I kid you not, and I predict that this phone will be marketed in the not too distant future is a device that responds to VOICE RECOGNITON and then makes the CALL and waits for VOICE INSTRUCTIONS from the MASTER USER. AND, this phone which I call and dub “SANDY” also has a touchey feeley keypad - no slimy touch screen - a full functioning KEYPAD - and also enabled for VOICE COMMANDS, such as “Sandy - SLEEP - Sandy WAKE UP - Sandy Call Eric Schmidt and tell him I love him.” “SANDY WAIT - STOP - call Eric Schmidt and Bill Gates and tell them I LOVE THEM BOTH.”

i’m sitting here in an IT classroom and i’m thinking to myself, if only there was a phone, like the iPhone, that had google earth, google maps, google GMail and other such google-like features. So here’s my thought; ‘Why don’t i search google and see if there is such a phone on the market’ and here i am. On this page, all about the google phone, it’s as if dreams can ACTUALLY come true. To be truly honest, this phone looks outstanding and if i wasn’t from Zimbabwe I may actually buy one, however with the current state of our economy it’s likely that i would have to sell my daughter to western millionaires just to be able to afford the bus into town to browse for one. Damn you cruel world, burn in the firey depths of hell. Power to the people. Down with Thatcher. Peace Out.
Got the new G1 phone delivered to me yesterday.
Looks very good at first glance, and it’s pretty straight forward to use.
The Google Maps feature with the inbuilt GPS that allows the phone to pretty much pinpoint your current location would come in very handy for people out in places they’re not familiar with, and they don’t know what to look for when searching the Google Maps.
The different Android application add-ons that you are going to be able to download looks great as well.
The only thing I am a bit unsure of is that the screen doesn’t really ‘lock into place’ when it’s in the standard, compact mode, with the keyboard hidden behind the screen.
