HTC’s high-end handset is a fantastic smartphone that puts a unique take on what the Android platform can do. However, if you’ve had the handset for a while it may be time to give it a spring clean and make sure its running at its peak. Here’s how to go about doing just that.

Check for software updates

A new version of Android may be available for your handset, bringing with it extra features and capabilities. Follow these steps to find out what’s on offer

  • Open the Settings menu and scroll down to About
  • Tap Software Updates
  • The handset will check for any that are available, and download them to your device

Update apps

Keeping your apps up to date can give your handset new capabilities and also correct any security flaws. Here’s how to check for the latest versions

  • Open the Google Play Store
  • Tap the three-dot icon in the top right and select My Apps
  • From the Installed list, tap Update and your apps will download their latest versions

Maybe you fancy a change to the things that appear in your news feed. Adding new services is easy

  • Swipe down to reveal the three-dot icon
  • Tap it and select Topics and Services
  • Scroll through the multitude of options on offer
  • Check a few new ones, then skip back and refresh your feed

Delete unused apps

You may well have gathered quite a collection of apps in the time you’ve had your handset. Here’s how to get rid of some of those that you no longer use

  • Open the Settings menu and select Apps
  • Under the list marked Downloaded, tap the app you want to delete
  • Hit the Uninstall button to remove the app

Move photos to cloud storage

Photos can take up a huge amount of space, so why not store those treasured memories in the cloud instead?

  • Sign up to a service such as Dropbox or Google Drive
  • Open the Gallery and select an image by pressing and holding on it
  • Select Share from the list that appears, then More
  • Choose which service you want to upload it to, then follow any further uploading options

Clean the bodywork

Handsets can get messy inside and out. Here’s how best to give your HTC One a scrub

  • Wipe the display with a screen wipe or lint cloth
  • Blow into the speakers and SIM tray to remove dust
  • Wipe the bodywork with a dry cloth to remove marks
