Have you had your Galaxy S4 for some time now, and want to make sure everything is still running as well as it can? Smartphones occasionally need a bit of a digital cleanup to clear out the clutter and give everything a bit of a spruce. Here’s how to make sure your Samsung handset is as healthy as can be.

Check for software updates

The Galaxy S4 can be upgraded to Android KitKat, although whether or not this is available will depend on your network. To check, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings menu
  • Select More, then About device
  • Hit software update, then Update, and your handset will download any new software

Update apps

New versions of apps are released regularly, so it’s worth checking to see if you have the newest and best features available for your favourites. Getting everything up to date is simple:

  • Open the Google Play store
  • Tap the three-line icon in the top left and select My Apps from the menu
  • Select Installed from the options at the top
  • Hit Update All to get the latest version of each of the apps on your handset

Delete unused apps

You may have downloaded several apps that you no longer use, and these can take up much-needed space on your handset. Once you’ve worked out which ones you don’t want, here’s how to get rid of them:

  • Open Settings and select More, then Application Manager
  • From the list marked Downloaded, select the app you want to delete
  • Hit Uninstall, at the top right on the screen, and the app will delete itself

Move photos to cloud storage

Photos can take up a huge amount of space, but can also be treasured memories that you don’t want to get rid of. To save them online, sign up to a service like Dropbox or Google Drive, then do as follows:

  • Open the Gallery
  • Press and hold an image to select it
  • A box will appear in the top right of each image. Check the ones you want to upload
  • Tap the sharing icon in the top right of the screen
  • Select the service you want to upload to
  • Follow any uploading instructions that you are given

Clean the bodywork

Smartphones inevitably pick up dust and dirt, so why not give yours a clean outside as well as in?

  • Use a lint cloth or screen wipe to get rid of any smudges on the display
  • Remove the back cover and blow on the handset to remove any dust
  • Wipe the device with a dry cloth to get rid of any other dirt
