Nokia may be in the process of pushing its new Nokia X smartphones to a wider audience, but it hasn’t forgotten about the Asha series. To prove it, a new, and very comprehensive software update is being distributed right now.
If you own a Nokia Asha phone, then you’re in for a treat, because Nokia has really gone to town on this update. Perhaps the biggest new addition to the Asha range is MixRadio. It’s already available on several Nokia Windows Phones, and it’s an often overlooked benefit. MixRadio is a subscription free service, which offers the ability to make playlists containing your favourite artists. They can be streamed over 3G or Wi-Fi, or downloaded for offline use. Again, it’s all for free.
That’s not all. Nokia has added in an enhanced camera app with a panorama mode, and a voice-guided selfie function, where using the rear camera is accompanied by instructions on making sure your face is in the right in the centre of the frame.
There are other, more subtle tweaks too. Fastlane will now show Facebook Likes and re-tweet information, plus there is a parental control mode, and the option to upload photos to Microsoft OneDrive.
Nokia will be distributing the update to the Asha 500, 501, 502, 503 and the Asha 230. You’ll be alerted when the software is ready to be downloaded, but in the meantime, Nokia has produced a video showing off the new features. Asha phones may not be as exciting as Nokia X or Lumia phones, but this update certainly makes them even better value. You can take a look at the video below.
