It has been a year since Sony announced the Xperia Z, and despite bringing the Xperia Z1 out since then, we’re still expecting a sequel. A rumour has appeared, hinting at what’s being called the Xperia Z2, also known under the codename Sirius.
We’re not sure about the Z2 name – it seems much to early to supersede the Z1, even if it is in name alone – but the source of the leak is adamant the information is correct. So what can we expect? It seems the largest change will be on the display, which could have a massive 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, matching the recently announced Vivo XPlay 3S.
Screens with a 1440p resolution are likely to become a regular feature on high-end smartphones during 2014, and it will be a considerable boost for Sony’s profile if it can get in before Samsung. The Korean firm is expected to put a 1440p screen on the front of the Galaxy S5.
The size of the Sirius’ screen may be increased to 5.2-inches, and the camera could be another 20.7-megapixel item, just like the Xperia Z1 and recently announced Z1 Compact. A big 3700mAh battery is rumoured for inclusion, which will certainly be needed to drive such a high-res display.
Sony announced a pair of smartphones during CES 2014 last week, but one was exclusive to T-Mobile in America, leaving plenty of room for Sony to impress at Mobile World Congress at the end of February. Will the Sirius/Xperia Z2 be one of the stars? We’ll find out soon.
