Feelgood Films for Christmas

Santa TV

Christmas is the right time of year to snuggle up on the sofa and enjoy a good film, but not everyone likes festive-themed movies. If stories of Santa or animated animals don’t do it for you, there are plenty of other flicks out there that capture the spirit of the season, even if they don’t feature a Christmas tree and tinsel in every shot. We take a look at some of the best movies to put you in the Yuletide mood, without overdoing the mistletoe and wine.

Amelie’s status as one of the ultimate feelgood films was cemented several years ago when Channel 4 chose to show it on Christmas Day. The tale of a lonely French girl who eventually finds love is ideal for putting you in the right mood for the festive season, and hopefully the movie may make it on to the TV schedules again this year. If not, it’s on Netflix.

Before Sunrise

The story of a chance meeting between two people who spend just one night together is a modern day Brief Encounter that will warm the coldest of hearts, and is perfectly suited for a bit of Christmas romance. If you’re in for a marathon session, take a look at the two sequels Before Sunrise has since spawned as well.

About a Boy

A brilliant silver screen adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel tells the story of Hugh Grant, a defiantly single modern man that slowly realises that he can’t get by without having others around him. All this is wrapped up in a light-hearted comedy format with a soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy.

Groundhog Day

This 1993 film sees Bill Murray at his absolute comic best as a TV weatherman who is forced to live the same day over and over again. The bizarre scenario is balanced with Murray’s hilarious performance, and even though it isn’t set at Christmas time it is full of snow.

The Straight Story

Director David Lynch took a break from his regular, surreal fare such as Twin Peaks to tell this heartwarming tale. The true story of Alvin Straight, an elderly man who rode a motorised lawnmower across two US states to visit his estranged brother, The Straight Story is the perfect family film for Christmas time.
