Services such as the hugely successful WhatsApp could soon be facing competition from a big name rival, if a report from tech site All Things D proves to be accurate.
Unnamed sources are cited by the US website as suggesting that Twitter is planning a major overhaul of its private messaging features, saying that the social network “plans to significantly update its direct-messaging product in the near future”.
The source went further, suggesting that Twitter has even ““kicked around the idea of launching a standalone direct-messaging application separate from the Twitter app”.
While real-time, public messaging is the main feature on which Twitter has built its enormous user base, the service could be feeling some threat from the popularity of the likes of WhatsApp. The app is now said to be handling in the region of 27 billion messages each day.
