Last month rumours began gathering about Tesco gearing up to release its very first Android tablet, putting it in direct competition with Amazon’s super popular Kindle Fire. Soon afterwards, it was linked with the Hudl name, and a pre-Christmas release was hinted. Now, according to tech site Pocket-Lint, Tesco has sent out invitations to the press for an event on 23 September, where it could officially announce the Hudl.
The invitation gives nothing away other than the date, but apparently, Tesco will be using #LetsHudl to promote the event, indicating the leaks were correct regarding the name. We’ve not heard anything about the specification of Tesco’s tablet, but gossip says it’s going to have a 7-inch display, just like most cheap Android slates.
Tesco will undoubtedly price the Hudl aggressively, and is expected to follow Amazon’s strategy of filling it with opportunities to buy Tesco’s own goods and services. This means a dedicated Blinkbox app for TV and movies should be installed, along with quick access to Tesco’s own websites for ordering your weekly shop. Also, Tesco has its own banking service, Pay As You Go mobile network, and is possibly launching an eBook store too.
The Hudl has some stiff competition already, but recent leaks point to Amazon updating the Kindle Fire tablet range very soon, meaning the Hudl best have some decent specs and a great price if it’s going to win the Christmas sales battle this year. It’s also facing a marketing battle too, as Amazon has made a name for itself with the Kindle, but Tesco is an unknown in the market.
We’ll find out everything about the Hudl and Tesco’s plans on 23 September.
