Back in April, when Mozilla confirmed which countries would be getting a Firefox OS phone, the UK was left off the list. It was a shame, as Firefox OS is one of the most promising of the new smartphone operating systems to launch this year. Subsequently, the ZTE Open made its debut in Spain, where it costs just 70 euros.
However, there has been a change of plan, and the UK won’t be left off the Firefox OS party list after all. ZTE has posted a press release on its website saying it will be selling the ZTE Open through its own eBay store later on this month. So, while you probably won’t be able to pop down the shops and buy a Firefox OS phone, at least you’ll be able to seek one out if you’re really keen.
You’ll have to be keen too, as the ZTE Open isn’t the most technically impressive phone you’ll see released this year. In fact, it’s about as basic as smartphones get. It has a 3.5-inch, 320×480 pixel resolution screen, a 1GHz single-core processor, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and 3G connectivity. Thankfully, it’s cheap at only £60, and it’s unlocked ready to use on any network you like.
So, if you’ve been looking forward to taking Firefox OS for a spin, you’re going to get your chance after all, and for a bargain price. According to ZTE’s eBay store, you’ll be able to buy an orange Open from Friday.
