Smartwatches are one of the most anticipated new products of 2013, but very few major companies have them on sale yet, with the majority of available watches coming from little known firms such as I’m Watch and Pebble. Sony is one of the few big names with a smartwatch, which has been on sale for some time, but has failed to win many fans.
Sony isn’t done with smartwatches though, and has all but confirmed it will be launching a new watch at Mobile Asia Expo 2013 in Shanghai, which begins on 26 June. The hints began on Twitter, where through its Xperia account, it posted a picture saying one out of three smartphone users want smart wrist wear, complete with the hashtags #itstime, and #MAE13.
It followed this up with something a little more cryptic, as it tweeted a brief timeline saying, “Pocket watch/wristwatch/digital watch/Live View/Smartwatch/?. Live View was the predecessor to the Smartwatch, and was produced under the Sony Ericsson brand, while obviously the question mark refers to the device we’ll see at the Asia Expo.
Sony has recently opened up the Smartwatch to developers, allowing them to create custom firmware for it, which can now be seen as a precursor to its retirement.
It’ll be very interesting to see Sony’s new design, as the Xperia Z and Tablet Z look great, and smartwatches are notoriously difficult to style successfully. We’ll bring you all the news from the Mobile Asia Expo during the week.
