Samsung Announces Galaxy S4 Zoom

Samsung has announced the Galaxy S4 Zoom, the latest in a flurry of handsets that have emerged from the Korean firm ahead of its major press event in London on 20 June.

The S4 Zoom is an unusual looking device which bears hallmarks of the Galaxy Camera and brings a powerful optical zoom lens to an Android smartphone. In contrast to the firm’s earlier camera device, the S4 Zoom does have the ability to make voice calls.

Specs include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 8GB of internal storage, with support for a microSD card up to 64GB in size. The device has a 4.27-inch Super AMOLED display and runs Android 4.2, making it a well-equipped, mid-range handset.

However, its stand out features are the 16 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and that distinctive 10x optical zoom lens. From one angle the handset looks a lot like the recently announced Galaxy S4 Mini, but turning it around marks it out as a very different offering.

We aren’t yet able to say how well the S4 Zoom performs, either as a camera or a smartphone. However, as we found with the Galaxy Camera, powerful photographic capabilities coupled with the editing and sharing options that come with a smartphone OS make for a great deal of potential.
