Weekly Web Highlight: 5 Second Films

5 Second Films

Our latest Weekly Web Highlight is a website that takes you on a tour of weirdness, delivered in incredibly short bursts that leave you wondering what just happened.

5 Second Films is a comedy website, of sorts, that features a enormous number of very short sketches, all adhering to the time limit that the titles suggests. The brainchild of a group of Californian students, the site has been online since 2008 and its YouTube videos have collectively garnered hundreds of millions of views.

Hit play on one of the clips and what you get is some of the quickest comedy you will ever experience. Often consisting of a simple set up and punch line the films are an incredible display of just how much can be crammed into such a short space of time, often eschewing any scene setting and stripping the jokes back to the bare bones of what is required to make you laugh.

With some inevitability, internet and geek humour feature heavily, and the sketches are often pretty surreal. Highlights include someone asking Satan to take a picture with their phone and a man selling doors, door-to-door. 5 Second Films is brilliant, hilarious and won’t take up too much of your time.
