We’ve known for a while Research in Motion will reveal BlackBerry 10 on January 30, and with it will come two new smartphones, the touchscreen L Series and the QWERTY keyboard equipped N Series. However, according to the firm’s chief marketing officer, the range won’t be stopping there, and these two will be joined by another four BB10 phones before the end of the year.
Exactly what form these new phones will take isn’t known, but they’ll be used to ensure RIM has all the price points covered, so it can challenge not only the iPhone and the Galaxy S III for example, but devices such as the Galaxy Ace and even some of the cheaper Android hardware from Huawei and ZTE too.
RIM needs BlackBerry 10 to be a hit, and therefore has to make it available to as many people as possible. We know it’s aiming at a global release and has signed networks from all over the world up to support the new OS, so making sure the high, mid and low ends of the pricing spectrum are covered too seems like a natural progression of the strategy.
We doubt any of these extra phones will be revealed at the end of this month, but the way RIM has been leaking recently means it may not be long before we get our first look. Will RIM give us another two touchscreen phones and another two QWERTYs? We’ll have to wait and see.
