Enjoy our round-up of ten mobile phone related news stories you may have missed including Huawei still teasing its big screen phone plans, Apple’s 12 Days of Christmas app and a Nexus 7 that’s even more of a bargain.
1. Huawei Planning Tablet/Smartphone Hybrid…Still
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Huawei wanting to challenge the Samsung Galaxy Note II, and like the last time, it’s keeping the hints at a minimum while still whetting our appetites. Speaking on the Weibo social network, Huawei’s CEO said a large-screen device would be released next year with a new design, slim chassis and a monster processor. Other than that, he didn’t reveal anything else.
2. LG E940 Leaked
Another 1080p smartphone has been vaguely leaked again this week – the LG E940. It has appeared in a set of benchmark figures sporting a 1080p screen, an Adreno 320 GPU and Android 4.1 onboard. LG has already talked about producing 5-inch 1080p screens, so we can assume this device will use one, and the Adreno graphics chip is usually joined by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro. Another one to look forward to next year.
3. Tim Cook Says Macs Will Be Made in America Next Year
In an interview with NBC, Apple CEO Tim Cook has said a line of Mac computers will be produced in America next year. This is a change from the computers being made in China, and an effort to appease those who condemn the company for its use of the controversial Foxconn factories. Cook dispelled talk that a USA-made iPhone wouldn’t be cost effective, saying instead that it was a skills problem that prevented the devices from being built there.
4. T-Mobile USA to Sell Apple Devices
T-Mobile USA will start to sell Apple devices in 2013, although the network has declined to say exactly which products it will stock. It’s safe to say it’ll be either the iPhone or the iPad, or potentially both, bringing it in line with other major US networks.
5. Apple Releases 12 Days of Christmas App
Apple’s annual 12 Days of Christmas app is now live in the iTunes App Store. It’s available for free and will offer a free app, movie, TV show, music or book everyday from 26 December to January 6. Download it today to make sure you’re ready to take advantage of the deals – which have been good other years – when they arrive.
6. Oppo Find 5 to be Sold in USA
The Oppo Find 5, another of the 1080p smartphones set for release soon, was originally expected to go on sale only in China, but it has now appeared on a US website too. The page looks official and claims the 5-inch, quad-core phone will be compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile when it’s released, and will cost $499/£310. Both these networks are GSM carriers, so there’s a chance the Find 5 will come to the UK too.
7. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Released
The 10th anniversary edition of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City has been released this week, and it’s available for iOS and Android, priced at £2.99. Converted over from the PlayStation 2 original, it follows Rockstar’s impressive conversion of Grand Theft Auto III this time last year. We’ll have a review of the game soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this brilliantly nostalgic trailer (which is ever-so slightly NSFW).
8. Make The Switch Between Android and iOS to WP8 Easier
If you’ve purchased, or are about to purchase, a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone then you may find Xyo.net helpful, as it will let you know which of you current favourite apps are available in the Windows Phone Store. When you find them, a QR code can guide you to the app ready to install. It’s a quick and easy way to help ease the switch.
9. The Times Offers Nexus 7 for £50
Yes, through The Times newspaper you really can get a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet for £50, the catch is you must sign up for an 18-month subscription at the same time, at a cost of £17 per month. Alternatively, you can save even more by paying £300 up front for everything, and considering the tablet on its own is £199, it’s a great deal.
10. Apple Continues iPhone 5 International Rollout
Apple has announced that between now and December, it will release the iPhone 5 in more than 50 additional countries, bringing the overall total up to more than 100 by the end of the year. South Korea on December 7 is first on the list, followed by Albania to Venezuela on 14 December, and Barbados to Vietnam on 21 December.
