We’re back with a round-up of news from day two of the IFA 2012 consumer technology show. If you missed day one’s coverage, you’ll find it here. Today is the opening day of the show, and most major announcements have now been made, although there are still plenty of interesting devices and software being discovered on the show floor. Here’s our pick of the best.
Samsung’s Dropbox Deal
Samsung’s Galaxy Note II took centre stage at its press event earlier this week, but the news it would come with a complimentary Dropbox account seemed to get lost amongst the talk of Android cameras and Windows Phone 8 devices. Here’s the deal, when you buy a Galaxy Note II or the Galaxy Camera, you’ll get a free 50GB Dropbox account. This is a similar deal to the one released with the Galaxy S III, so expect the promotion to be worldwide.
Windows 8 Games Announced
Microsoft has released the names of the first 40 Xbox Live games to be made available on Windows 8. All will include Achievements, and the vast majority will also have leaderboards and multiplayer modes too. The titles include both Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space, Cut the Rope, Jetpack Joyride, Reckless Racing Ultimate, Toy Soldiers Cold War, Monster Island, and Fruit Ninja.
Zagg Pro Plus Keyboard
Designed for the iPad, the Zagg Pro Plus‘ claim to fame is a MacBook Pro-like backlit keyboard, plus the keyboard becomes a cover when it’s not in use, and has a sleep/wake magnet system just like Apple’s Smart Covers. Other features include a rechargeable battery and iPad specific keys. It’s set to launch in September with a US price of $130.
Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite
We’d be much more interested in the MediaPad 7 Lite tablet if it was coming to the UK, but so far it’s set for South Africa, Russia and Asia only. What we’re missing is a 7-inch Android tablet with Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1.2GHz processor, plus both 3G and Wi-Fi.
Huawei has announced the G600, a new Android smartphone due to go on sale next month. It has a 4.5-inch, 960 x 540 pixel touchscreen, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 4GB of internal memory. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and has an 8 megapixel camera on the rear of the attractive chassis. Availability isn’t known, as Huawei has only committed to it being sold in “selected markets” at this stage.
The second of three Huawei products announced today is the G330, a low-to-mid range Android phone with a 1GHz dual-core processor, a 4-inch screen boasting a 480 x 800 pixel resolution and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s set for a European release this November.
Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2
One of the most popular new products to be announced during this year’s show has been a tablet/laptop hybrid running Windows 8. This is Lenovo’s offering, the ThinkPad Tablet 2, and it runs the full version of Windows 8, powered along by an Intel processor. The 10.1-inch tablet is 9.8mm thick and weighs 600 grams, which is good for a full-on Windows slate. It’s out in late October, and the price has yet to be confirmed. The IFA 2012 show continues over the weekend, so look out for any last minute news early next week.
