Sony Mobile has begun sending out invitations to the press for a special pre-IFA 2012 event, where it will reveal at least one new device. The IFA show takes place in Berlin, is one of the world’s best known consumer electronics trade shows, and starts on 31 August.
Sony’s press event has been scheduled for Wednesday 29 August at 4pm, where in addition to the press conference, there will be an “exclusive booth unveiling”, whatever that means.
The invitations have been delivered to several mobile-only websites, but anyone with IFA press credentials can attend, so it’s a safe bet we’re going to see either new Xperia smartphones or new Sony tablets. If we’re lucky, we may get both.
Sony has recently released the Xperia Miro and Tipo in Europe, but we’re still waiting for the European version of the Hayabusa, or Xperia GX as it’s known in Japan. The GX has a 4.6-inch touchscreen, a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and a 13 megapixel camera. An Xperia phone with similar specs has recently been leaked, suggesting an imminent release.
Last year, Sony announced the Xperia Arc S during the IFA show, so it’s not afraid of bringing out the big guns at the Berlin event. The phone then went on sale in October, so anything that is announced this year could have a similarly speedy release.
In addition to Sony, Samsung is rumoured to be holding a press conference before the show officially starts. It’s here that the Galaxy Note II is expected to make its debut, provided it doesn’t appear at Samsung’s US event on 15 August.
