It has been one of the most striking omissions from the iTunes App Store, but as of today Facebook has finally given iPad owners what they’ve always wanted – an official tablet version of their app!
Although the social network could be viewed in Safari, it was never ideal, and despite a version of the iPad app leaking inside the iPhone app recently, Facebook just never seemed to get round to releasing it. Of course, this pleased the many third-party developers who cashed-in with their own Facebook clients.
Just a few days after the Apple iPhone 4S event, where it was also rumoured the official app would be unveiled, it’s all ready for download from the App Store. It features a redesigned user interface, especially made for the larger screen, an enhanced photo gallery, chat and games too. If you’ve already got the iPhone version of the app, an update will make it ‘universal’ for both the phone and the tablet.
Facebook has also announced a line of HTML5 games. Games have been a big part of Facebook for a while, but as they were all Flash-based, they didn’t work on the iPad, iPhone or some other devices. The introduction of a new line of HTML games solves this problem.
Working inside the new iPad app, the new games include FarmVille Express and Words with Friends from Zynga, iMobsters and Vampire Live from Storm 8 and an as yet untitled game from Electronic Arts. Dedicated gamers will also be able to use Facebook Credits with their mobile games, thanks to a change in the API.
