At first glance, the deal between Beats by Dr. Dre and HTC isn’t that exciting, as although the Beats equipment is very good, mobile speakers and audio systems are limited by their small size; making it doubly as hard to make any appreciable difference in quality; even for ones so skilled as the Beats crew.
However, if the following rumour plays out, then HTC’s Beats by Dr. Dre phones will be very exciting indeed; but perhaps not for the right reason.
Apparently, the first device wearing the rapper’s musical endorsement will be the HTC Vigor, a 4.3-inch touchscreen phone with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, a sizeable 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM; plus an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel video-call lens too.
Google’s Android Gingerbread will be the operating system, and a new version of HTC’s Sense UI will be placed over the top; which we can take to include the software-side of Dr. Dre’s involvement.
Sounds great, right? Absolutely, but it’s interesting this spec-list doesn’t make any mention of flashy speaker systems, a special pair of headphones or anything related to Beats. What, exactly, is HTC $300 million going to buy them? Will it be a Sony Ericsson Walkman-style music player with some strategic branding, plus Dr.Dre’s face and the Beats logo on some ads?
Of course, the Vigor may not turn out to be a Beats phone at all, and the new industry pairing really could come up with something unique. Chances are we’ll find out in the autumn.
