Enjoy our roundup of ten mobile phone related news stories you may have missed this week, including Google’s new activation figures, the Ovi Store’s latest download count and the amount of iPad apps now available inside the App Store. It’s not just a numbers week either, as we’ve got a new TAG Heuer phone too!
1. Google Activating 500,000 Androids Per Day
Google is now estimating a 4.4% growth in the amount of Android activations week on week, resulting in a total of 500,000 new Android devices per day. Remember, this isn’t just smartphones any more, as there are now tablets to take into account too.
2. Ovi Store Now Has Six Million Downloads Per Day
The second company reporting some big numbers this week is Nokia, who say their Ovi Store now records six million mobile app downloads every day, and activates 300,000 new accounts each day too. Not bad for a ‘dying’ platform with ‘only’ 48,000 apps!
3. Over 100,000 Dedicated iPad Apps Available
Our third piece of news this week, which features a very big number, comes from the Apple App Store, where just 450-odd days after its launch, the iPad has more than 100,000 dedicated applications!
4. ZTE Announce the Libra
Could this be the follow-up to the ZTE Blade? It does look strikingly similar to the phone also known as the San Francisco, but this time it’ll run Android Gingerbread 2.3.4. Otherwise, the spec is almost identical, with 3G, a 600MHz processor, GPS, a 3 megapixel camera and a 3.5-inch touchscreen.
5. IDEOS X1 Launches in Australia
Huawei are sending their IDEOS X1 smartphone around the world, with Australia being the latest recipient of the cheap Android 2.2 phone. It has a 2.8-inch capacitive screen, 3G, a 3.2 megapixel camera and weighs just 100 grams. It looks a little like the T-Mobile Pulse, but has yet to make an appearance in the UK.
6. Go 3D with the Pic3D Film
If you want a 3D iPhone or iPad, then the new Pic3D film is for you! The sheet of film converts the Apple phone and tablet’s 2D display into 3D. You can see it working in the video below, and it’ll go on sale in Japan from August.
7. TAG Heuer Announce Link Phone
While best known for their watches, TAG Heuer has now leapt into the Android phone world with the Link, a 3.5-inch screened Android 2.2 device. It costs a massive £4000 and has been made from alligator skin, 18-carat rose gold, steel and titanium.The design has been inspired by their watches too, as the screen, its surround and a weird winder on the side make it look exactly like an oversized TAG! 8. Samsung Announce Conquer 4G for USA
Coming soon to the Sprint network in the USA is the Samsung Conquer 4G, a potentially affordable way into the so-called ’4G’ connectivity world. The phone has a 3.5-inch screen with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution, a 1GHz processor, a 3.2 megapixel camera and Android 2.3.
9. Symbian S60 Gets an Update
Despite being on its last legs, Symbian S60 3rd and 5th Edition have been updated this week, with a new browser, Ovi Maps improvements and some other tweaks. Older phones should benefit nicely from the changes – the devices include the E72, 6700 Slide, the N97 Mini and the 5800 – which are being slowly rolled out over the coming months.
10. Splitscreen: A Love Story Wins Nokia Award
The winner of Nokia’s short film competition has been revealed, and it’s Splitscreen: A Love Story! by JW Griffiths. Shot entirely on an N8, it follows the journey of two people living in different cities eventually united by the magic of cinema! You can see the movie below:
