Will the Xperia X7 Be Home to Windows Phone 7?

Last week we were shown a photograph of a device claiming to be the Sony Ericsson Xperia X12 and now we’ve got two more Xperia rumours to go with it – the X7 and the X7 Mini. Oddly enough for a set of pictures, the pair have appeared in a brief YouTube video showing their potential specs and what looks like an artist’s impression of the handsets.

If real, the X7 and X7 Mini are likely to be Sony Ericsson’s first Windows Phone 7 devices and would fill holes in both the mid and top-end of the Windows Phone hardware line-up. The X7′s spec sheet looks like this:

  • 4.3″, 480 x 800 touchscreen.
  • 8.1 megapixel camera.
  • 720p video recording.
  • 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor.
  • HDMI-out.
  • Dolby Digital Plus.

The X7 Mini differs slightly:

  • 3.5″, 480 x 800 touchscreen.
  • 10.1 megapixel camera.
  • 720p video recording.
  • 3x optical zoom and a xenon flash.
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

For the most part, these specs seem realistic, and the obvious correlation between X7 and Windows Phone 7 fits in with how other manufacturers have named their handsets; but there are one or two things that make us sceptical. It’s not the 1.2GHz Snapdragon though, as we know they’re on their way and the MSM8260 has already been outed as running at that speed. No, it’s the whole X7 Mini optical zoom that sounds like wishful thinking.

It just happens so rarely – the Altek Leo was the last we heard of – and adds a degree of bulkiness that many find unattractive on a smartphone, that we’d be surprised if Sony Ericsson would bother. Other questions are raised with the inclusion of an HDMI-out, and we are always put off by poor spelling in ‘official’ documentation, as the X7 Mini has ‘budled’ noise cancellation headphones.

The pair are supposedly making an appearance during Q1 of 2011. We’ll see!
