Dropbox is a popular cloud-based file sharing app that syncs across all of your different computers and web-access mobile phones. This guide teaches you the basics of getting started with using Dropbox on the iPhone.
You an sign up for a Dropbox account online or you can start right away with the iPhone app. Either way, download the app to your iPhone in the same way as all other apps are downloaded. Open the app and it will ask you if you’re a new user or already have a Dropbox account. If you do have one, enter your login information. Otherwise, proceed to set up your account following the on-screen instructions. When you enter the Dropbox app for the first time, it will tell you all of the things that you are able to do with this app. Read this information to get started.
When the app is open you will see in the top left corner of the screen that where it says “My Dropbox”. Tap on this to see the files that you have stored in your Dropbox. If you are already a Dropbox user, the files that you’ve stored using your home computer and other devices will be located here. (If not then this is where all files will appear as you start saving them to Dropbox). The files are sorted alphabetically by name. Beneath each file is a description that reminds you when it was downloaded, how big the file is and what file type the file has been saved as. The great thing about this program is that it allows you to access many different file types. Simply tap on the file that you want to open and you will be able to view it.
Sharing with Dropbox
Dropbox is nice because it shares your information across all of your different devices. However, it’s also great because you can easily use it to share your up-to-date files with others. That means that you can send business files to your co-workers or photos to your family members. Simply open the file that you want to share. On the bottom left of the menu bar you will see an envelope icon that allows you to share the file via email. Enter the email address of the person that you want to send the file to and send.
In addition to using email to share Dropbox files you can also create shared folders in Dropbox that can be accessed by others. Choose the folder that you want to share from your dropbox list. Select “share this folder” and enter the email addresses of the people that you want to share with. When you want them to have access to files, add them to this folder. For example, open the folder on your iPhone and then take a picture with the phone and the picture will be saved to the shared file for others to access.
Dropbox is also available for BlackBerry.
