Obama Orders Expansion of American Wireless Spectrum

While Australian technology seems to struggle under politicians, President Obama is taking steps to ensure the American wireless web will be working well into the next decade. He’s sent a memo asking his agencies to free up an extra 500 MHz of spectrum for wireless broadband, and the thing about White House stationary is that those memos actually get things done.

Presidential power isn’t wasted on the spectrum issue either – there are only a finite number of frequencies available for this kind of data and everyone wants them. The electromagnetic spectrum is a patchwork of earmarked and privately held bandwidths, and this extra half a gigahertz is going to have to come from somewhere – look forward to some heavily overseen electromagnetic elbowing to make room over the next few years.
