Top Ten Mobile Phone News Stories of the Week – 16th April 2010

Enjoy our roundup of some of the best mobile phone stories that you may have missed this week:

1.  First Microsoft Kin Advert Debuts.

This week saw Microsoft announce the Kin One and Kin Two and now we can see them in action in their very own TV advert! At least we could if it wasn’t filled with singers, people with bear costumes and others creepy individuals taking pictures under their shirts. The phones? They made an appearance for about three seconds and would be missed if you happened to glance the other way.

2.  UK iPad Release Delayed.

It may not be a mobile phone, but it runs a mobile phone OS! The Apple iPad was due to launch at the tail end of April, but Apple earlier this week made a statement saying that America was buying up all the iPads they could and the international release would have to be delayed until the end of May instead. Pre-orders begin on the 10th May with prices and 3G tariffs still to be announced.

3.  Opera for iPhone Gets Downloaded a Lot!

We love the new Opera Mini Browser for the iPhone, which was approved earlier this week despite many expecting it to be rejected. It seems we’re not the only ones who rather like it either, as in just 24 hours the app racked up 1 million downloads and hit the App Store’s number one spot in twenty two countries!

4.  Vodafone 845 Leaked.

A new Vodafone branded mobile running Android has been leaked. The phone is made by Huawei and is named as the Joy, however there are no details on when we will see it on sale or the cost. It’s probably not going to be that expensive though, as the phone has an average spec by current standards, with a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and 3G/HSDPA.

5.  Pantech Sirius Gets Serious

Another Android based phone seen this week is the Pantech Sirius, a 3.7″ touchscreen device with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. It’ll be on sale in Korea but Pantech are apparently trying their luck promoting the phone to US and European carriers.

6.  Hero Getting v2.1.

HTC Hero owners can look forward to a present around the end of April, courtesy of HTC, when it’s scheduled to receive an upgrade to Android v2.1! HTC suggest watching their Twitter stream or Facebook page for more news and that the update will be delivered over-the-air.

7.  Palm Pixi and Pre Plus Update.

If you’re a Palm fan and want to get in before the company gets sold off, then it’s looking like O2 will be selling the Pixi and the Pre Plus in the UK.  A trade ad in a German publication showed O2 would also be stocking the pair of Palm handsets there too.

8.  Satio Goes to America…Late

Remember the Sony Ericsson Satio? Announced somewhere around 1582, released at the beginning of Q4 2009? Of course you do as it’s a good phone plagued by one or two teething problems. Well, this six-month old phone has just been launched in the USA, where, despite the 12 megapixel camera, everyone will be pretty under whelmed.

9.  New Motorola Android Phone Spotted.

While this new phone continues the Motorola formula of a touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, it appears to do so in a strange square form factor. Little else aside from this picture is currently known, but doubtless more leaks are to come!

10.  Help Us!

Quick! HTC need your help! Pop over to their Facebook page where the company are asking for advice as to what to call one of their forthcoming mobile phones. You’re given the choice of the Jovi, Zeal, Festi and Wildfire, so get over there and vote!
